Library Loans the Internet: Announcing WiFi Hotspots for Checkout

Free WiFiWe have implemented a new service allowing Harrison Township residents to checkout WiFi hotspots. The new devices will provide Internet access wherever it’s needed, expanding service beyond the walls of the library.

“The Harrison Township Public Library is committed to removing barriers to library resources. These hotspots will allow those without Internet the opportunity to check it out from the library,” said Library Director, Melissa Goins. “With this new service, we hope to reach local students who might need Internet access at home or people who need the Internet to apply for jobs and financial assistance.”

A WiFi hotspot is a small device that can be used to access and connect wireless enabled devices to the Internet like laptops, smartphones, or tablets. Hotspots are portable so you can connect your devices almost anywhere you are. The library added 5 mobile WiFi hotspots from Mobile Beacon. Hotspots are available to borrow for 14 days and due to anticipated high demand, will carry a $1/day late fee if not returned on time. Devices more than 24 hours late will be deactivated. The hotspots can be placed on reserve just like other library materials.

Hotspots are the first non-traditional items offered by the Harrison Township Library. The library is on the August ballot asking the voters for 1 mil, which includes technology upgrades for the library. HTPL director, Ms. Goins states, “This is a first for us but we know that hotspots and other non-traditional items are popular at other libraries. We certainly hope more will follow.”
