For Immediate Release: Daughters of the American Revolution help preserve history at Harrison Township Public Library

The Alexander Macomb Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented a donation to the Harrison Township Public Library at the Harrison Township Board meeting on Monday, July 6. The donation will provide digital preservation equipment for public use and the library’s up-and-coming archival collection.

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a nonpolitical, nonpartisan, volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to historic preservation, education, and patriotism. The DAR membership is “made up of women from all walks of life, with lineage to an ancestor who participated in the struggle for American Independence,” according to their website.

The Chapter first met at HTPL in October of 2025 when there was a disruption to their usual meeting place, leaving the group without a home. Melissa Goins, Library Director, offered the conference room in the library, which is available for public use.

“We were scrambling for a new meeting place, and Melissa came to our rescue,” said Lindy Brozovic, Regent of the Alexander Macomb Chapter, in an emotional delivery to the board. “In our thanks, I asked Melissa to give me a wish list, something we could help the library with. It is my honor to present this donation today.”

Several members of the DAR sold handmade wreaths at the Made in Michigan Show in Mount Clemens on May 9 and 10. All proceeds, totaling $855.00, were donated to the library.

The donation will fund the purchase of digital preservation equipment, including a DVD and VCR combo player, an 8 mm cassette player, and a Video to Digital Converter. Once the equipment is available to the public, community members will have the opportunity to convert aging formats into digital videos. The equipment will also be used to develop the library’s archival collection.

“Both the library and the Daughters of the American Revolution value historic preservation with an emphasis on local history,” said Melissa Goins, Library Director. “HTPL is in the process of developing an archival collection and revitalizing the Harrison Township Historical Commission, so when Lindy asked how they could help, I immediately thought of digital preservation.”

“Thanks to the Daughters, this equipment will be available at the library very soon,” Goins announced to the board. Harrison Township Supervisor Ken Verkest also thanked the DAR for their donation and the library for their accommodations.

“On behalf of the residents who will be able to use that equipment, I thank the Daughters for their donation,” said Verkest. “I think it’s also important to thank the folks at the library and Melissa for offering to accommodate your needs. She accommodated the needs that you had, and you were kind enough to return that favor.”
